Publisher's Note: United we blog

  • Afghanistan has a long war torn history where there were gross human rights violations
  • Life expectancy at birth in Bhutan is only 65.2%
  • 28.5 % of Indians are below poverty line
  • Maldives still depends on external help to meet its food-needs
  • 39% children in Nepal are underweight
  • Only 39.3 % children in Pakistan go to school
  • Sri Lanka has a large number of refugees displaced due to Eelam war

In spite of these facts there is no ‘beat’ in the South Asian Media on covering poverty, labour, women, children and other marginalised sections. Even if there are programmes targeted at some of these sections, they present a vulgar and non-representative understanding. Their facts, rather stories, are far from reality.

South Asia is home to half of the poor in the world. A third of the global poor reside in India. But the main stream media does not give any priority to these issues. This is just an example, most of the marginal issues like culture, art and others are left out. In the name of TRP and corporate interest, media seems to be making compromise with social responsibility. Some of us, journalists by profession, thought of penning down some issues of such marginal talk. Hence, here we are. Your feedbacks are valuable in making our decisions in the future.
